Apprenticeship Spotlight – Liam Simpson

Liam joined Waterman Aspen in August 2021 and completed his degree apprenticeship last year. Since then, his progression hasn’t stopped… he was promoted to Area Manager in April 2025 and has also shared his expertise more widely by recently presenting his technical paper at ICDCS 2025.

Why do you think an apprenticeship is such a strong route into the profession?

“An apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience alongside academic learning. Over the course of a degree apprenticeship, you spend 4-6 years applying your knowledge directly in the workplace and contributing to real projects. In contrast, full-time students often don’t see the practical relevance of their studies until they enter employment. It’s also a great way to earn while you learn and avoid the burden of student loans.”

How has your role evolved since completing your apprenticeship?

“Towards the end of my apprenticeship, I was promoted to Engineer, which allowed me to take on greater responsibility within my secondment role and work on more complex projects. Likewise, I’ve also been promoted to Area Manager within Waterman Aspen, allowing me to represent and promote the company that supported me throughout my apprenticeship journey.”

Where do you see your career heading over the next few years?

“I hope to continue developing my skills as a Bridge Engineer, particularly within maintenance and refurbishment projects, while working towards achieving CEng MICE. At the same time, I aim to refine my capabilities as an Area Manager to ensure I continue contributing to Waterman Aspen’s ongoing success.”
